The Heritage of Luxury

Tarn & Co, Newington Causeway, S.E. London

Elephant and Castle wasn't always what you see today. In the early 1900s, this corner of South London was known as the 'Piccadilly of the South'; a thriving hub of theatres, jewellers, tailors, and grand shops. Among them stood the original Tarn & Co., a department store that became renowned for something simple but important: sourcing and selling beautiful things.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The original Tarn & Co. made its name with silks, velvets, millinery, furniture, and haberdashery. They didn't make these products themselves. Instead, they did what they did best — they found the finest goods available and brought them to the gentlefolk of London.

It stood alongside impressive neighbours, including a mini-Harrods established by the son of the original Harrods founder. The area buzzed with quality and craftsmanship. Standards were high because people expected them to be.

Over a century later, we're still here in Elephant and Castle. The theatres and tailors may have gone, but the principle that built the original Tarn & Co. remains.

WHAT HERITAGE MEANS TODAY

Heritage isn't about living in the past. It's about carrying forward the values that mattered then and still matter now.

The original Tarn & Co. existed to enrich the everyday moments of their customers. We do the same. Whether it's your morning coffee, a gift for someone special, or a treat for yourself, we believe these moments deserve products made properly.

Our products aren't just for the gentry anymore — they're for everyone. Coffee-lovers, gift-givers, chocoholics, foodies. Anyone who appreciates the difference between something mass-produced and something crafted with care.

INSPIRED BY OUR FOREFATHERS

When we revived the Tarn & Co. name, we wondered what those 19th-century merchants would make of things now. They'd probably give the sideboards and drapes a miss, that's for sure. But the commitment to quality, the eye for what's genuine, the dedication to finding the best, would definitely remain.

So that's what we did.

We work with artisans and craftsmen who are experts in their field. People who use quality ingredients and stick to traditional methods. No over-refinement: just honest, well-made goods from people who care deeply about their craft.

The Tarn & Co. Promise

Like our forefathers, we're procurers. We search out the individual, the authentic, the finest. We collaborate with makers who share our focus on quality and taste. Everything we stock is ethically sourced because cutting corners isn't in our DNA.

The world has changed enormously since that original store opened its doors. But the desire for quality things, made well, by skilled hands? That hasn't changed at all.

We're proud to carry the Tarn & Co. name forward. Same principles. Same location. And the same belief that life's too short for anything less than the finest.
